Why Your Emails Land in Gmail's Promotions Tab

Gmail sorts incoming mail into tabs, and the Promotions tab is where emails go to be read later, or never. A proposal that lands there can sit unopened for days. Here is what pushes a one-to-one email into Promotions, and what keeps it in the Primary inbox.

How Gmail decides

Gmail looks at what an email looks like and at how the recipient usually treats similar emails. Emails that look like newsletters, heavy on images, links and formatting, tend to go to Promotions. Emails that look like a conversation go to Primary.

What pushes an email to Promotions

  • Many links, buttons or images, especially a large header image.
  • Heavy HTML templates, as produced by marketing tools.
  • Marketing language: discounts, "limited offer", lots of capitals.
  • Sending the same email to many people at once.

How to stay in Primary

  • Write like a person: short paragraphs, plain formatting, one or two links at most.
  • Send from your own mailbox, one recipient at a time.
  • Start a conversation that gets replies: replied threads stay in Primary.

Does tracking push emails to Promotions?

A single invisible image does not make an email look like a newsletter. Click tracking rewrites links, so keep links to what you actually need. More in does email tracking hurt deliverability.

How to spot the problem

If emails to Gmail addresses stay unopened much longer than the others, the Promotions tab is a likely suspect. Send a test to your own Gmail address and see which tab it lands in. Spam is a different problem, covered in how to tell if your email went to spam.

Conclusion

Gmail rewards emails that look like conversations. Keep business emails plain, personal and to the point, and they stay where they get read.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see which tab my email landed in?

Not directly. A test sent to your own Gmail address shows how Gmail classifies emails like it.

Does a signature with a logo matter?

A small logo is fine. Several images and social icons push the email toward the look of a newsletter.

Is Promotions the same as spam?

No. Promotions is still the inbox, just a less visible tab. Spam is filtered out of the inbox entirely.
