Can ChatGPT or Claude Tell You Who Opened Your Email?
Yes, with one condition: the AI needs access to open tracking data, because neither ChatGPT, Claude nor your mailbox records when someone opens your email. Here is how to set it up in a few minutes, assistant by assistant.
Short answer. An AI assistant cannot see what happens to an email after you send it. Connect an email tracker that speaks MCP, such as mailcheck, and Claude or ChatGPT can answer "Who opened my proposal this week?" from your real tracking data.
Why AI assistants cannot know it by default
Knowing that an email was opened requires something inside the email that reports the open, usually an invisible image loaded when the message is displayed. That has to be added when you send. Your mailbox does not record your recipients' opens, so even an assistant connected to your inbox only sees what you sent and received, not who read it. How the image works is explained in how the tracking pixel works.
How it works with mailcheck
- Track your emails. Install the mailcheck Chrome extension and switch Tracking ON in your compose window, plus Clicks ON to follow link clicks. It works in Gmail, Outlook.com, Zoho Mail, Hostinger Mail, Mail Orange and SFR Mail.
- Connect the AI. Add the mailcheck connector,
https://mcp.getmailcheck.com, to your assistant and sign in with your mailcheck account. - Ask in plain language. "Who has not opened my emails this week?", "Which prospects opened my proposal several times?"
The connector uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP), the open standard both Claude and ChatGPT use to connect to outside tools. It is read only and included in every paid plan.
With Claude
Custom connectors are available on every Claude plan, Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Free accounts are limited to one custom connector. On an individual plan:
- Open Customize, then Connectors.
- Click + Add, then Add custom connector.
- Name it mailcheck and enter
https://mcp.getmailcheck.com, then click Continue. - Sign in with your mailcheck account when asked, then click Add.
On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner adds the connector for the organization first, then each member connects with their own account. More on the connector on the Claude connector page.
With ChatGPT
ChatGPT connects to outside tools through custom apps in developer mode. According to OpenAI's help center:
- Business, Enterprise and Edu: custom MCP apps are available on ChatGPT web. A workspace admin enables developer mode in Workspace Settings, under Permissions & Roles.
- Pro: you can connect MCP servers with read and fetch permissions in developer mode. The mailcheck connector only reads, so this is all it needs.
- Other plans: check OpenAI's current help article, as availability changes often.
Once developer mode is on, create an app from Settings, then Apps, then Create. Enter https://mcp.getmailcheck.com as the endpoint, choose OAuth, click Scan Tools, sign in with your mailcheck account, then click Create. The app then appears in your enabled apps, ready to select in a chat.
With other AI agents
Any agent or tool that supports MCP can connect to the same address, either with the OAuth sign-in or with an API key created in your mailcheck dashboard.
What you can ask
- Unopened emails: "Who has not opened my emails since Monday?"
- Every open of an email: "When was my Q4 proposal opened?"
- Link clicks: "Did anyone click the pricing link in my proposal?"
- Engagement of a contact: "How engaged is sarah@northwind.co with my emails?"
- Your tracked emails: "List the emails I sent to Northwind this month and whether they were opened."
- Statistics: "What were my open rate, click rate and average time to first open this month?"
Five more ideas, with what each answer is good for, in 5 questions to ask Claude about your email opens.
What the AI can and cannot see
The connector is read only. It exposes the subject, the recipient, the sender and the open times of the emails you tracked, plus the links clicked and when for emails sent with Clicks ON, and nothing else. It cannot read the body of your emails, cannot send an email and cannot change your data. Every request is limited to your own account, and you can revoke access at any time.
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT see if my email was opened?
Not on its own. Neither ChatGPT nor your mailbox records when a recipient opens an email. With an email tracker such as mailcheck connected through MCP, ChatGPT can read your open tracking data and answer.
Can Claude tell me who opened my emails?
Yes, once you add the mailcheck connector to Claude. Custom connectors are available on every Claude plan, including Free, which is limited to one custom connector.
Which ChatGPT plans can add a custom connector?
According to OpenAI's help center, custom MCP apps in developer mode are available on ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu, and Pro users can connect MCP servers with read and fetch permissions. The mailcheck connector is read only.
Can ChatGPT or Claude tell me who clicked my links?
Yes, for the emails you sent with Clicks ON. The connector returns each link, how many times it was clicked and when.
Can the AI read the content of my emails?
No. The mailcheck connector exposes the subject, the recipient, the sender, the open times and, for emails sent with Clicks ON, the links clicked and when. It never exposes the body of your emails, and it cannot send or change anything.
Do I need a paid plan?
The connector is included in every paid mailcheck plan, from $9 a month. Tracking itself is free to start.

Start with tracking. The AI can only answer about emails you tracked. Add mailcheck to Chrome, free, and switch Tracking ON in your next email.
